From the Director
The 2006-07 academic and athletic year brought several exciting changes and challenges to Athletic Training Services.
UI Athletic Education Program Director Dan Foster will be recognized during the 2007 NATA National Symposium in Anaheim, CA by receiving ‘Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer’ award. Dan has been an academic leader on the state, district, and national levels for over thirty years. He represents himself and the profession of Athletic Training with integrity and commitment in all that he involves himself. Congratulations Dan, you represent academic leadership, professionalism, and humanitarian spirit in all that you do; we are fortunate that you are part of our family.
Four athletic training staff members are completing career milestones to The University of Iowa. Russ Haynes (20 years), Mike Lawler (15 years), John Streif (35 years), and Mike Shaffer (5years) will be recognized in May at the Athletic Training Education Program Awards Banquet for their considerable service and clinical education commitment to The University of Iowa. These UI ATS members have provided 75 years of academic and interpersonal guidance to past and present Athletic Training Students, Student Athletes, and fellow Athletic Trainers.
Brandon Richard Doyle, son of UI Athletic Trainer Matt Doyle and wife Jennie celebrates his first birthday June 24, 2007. We wish for Brandon’s cake to be very large and significantly chocolate!
UI Athletic Trainer Jennie Sertterh (some of us still call her Hartgrave) travels with the UI Women’s Basketball Team to Greece in May. Jennie promises to bring large quantities of Baklava back for the rest of the ATS staff.
UI Athletic Training Services welcomed five new Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainers in August 2006. Jon Fravel, Anthony Taylor, James Halpin, Josylin White, and Abigail Tibbetts provide excellent clinical care to UI student athletes and clinical instruction for the UI A.T.E.P. We are fortunate to have them as part of our staff.
Director of UI Sports Medicine Center Ned Amendola and the entire Sports Medicine staff are happy that the vision of a multi-disciplinary UI Sports Medicine Center is becoming reality. The existing UI Sports Medicine Center in John Papajohn Pavilion of UIHC has grown and experienced much success. This growth has served as the foundation for planning and development of a new UI Sports Medicine Center on the West Campus site near the new Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The new UI Sports Medicine Center will offer outpatient orthopedic physician care, primary care sports medicine care, physical therapy, athletic training, sports medicine research, athletic performance improvement, custom orthotics fitting and fabrication, and orthopedic diagnostic imaging; It will be a unique collaboration between Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, and UI physicians in a state of the art facility that should enhance our current services. The new center will serve UI student athletes, active individuals within the community and region of all ages and skill, UI faculty and staff, UI students, and any competitive or recreational athlete who recognizes the tremendous value of the center’s diversity of health care staff and services.
Have a great summer. Go Hawks!

Field Hockey 2006 Big Ten Champions
Wade Soenksen, Third year ATS for Field Hockey
On arrival to Ann Arbor expectations were high and hopes were even higher for the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament. After a frustrating regular season filled with many peaks and valleys the team exuded a new energy. This new life could be felt through the parents, coaching staff, and athletic training personnel and the athletes themselves. Iowa Field Hockey had something to prove to themselves and the rest of the tournament field. Getting through this weekend and proving themselves meant the hardest schedule of three consecutive days of hard fought matches against some of the toughest teams in the nation.
Our first match up pitted us against the nemesis Michigan Wolverines. Our earlier meeting in the year ended with a disappointing loss at home in overtime. The stage was set for a revenge match up remembering the previous years’ home field first round loss to Michigan in the tournament. The team knew there was a score to settle and needed to establish their dominance early in the tournament. This was done no better than to give the Wolverines an early exit on their own turf in a thrilling 2-1 overtime win.
The first ranked Ohio State Buckeyes awaited us in the next game. Moments of excellence were seen in the first game of the year which ended in another overtime loss. Not only was the first victory giving the girls a motivational boost but so was being one win away from the championship game. They knew now more than ever they could hold nothing back must leave it out on the field if a championship was to be won. It just so happened this day was reserved for the Hawkeye’s with a 2-0 shutout of the powerhouse.
Third and final day of competition was a championship final against Penn State. All the way up to this point pain and fatigue were secondary to the chance to become Big Ten Champions. Each person put aside anything that may have been limiting them during the season for one common goal. Injuries and illnesses were not a factor anymore with the task at hand being bigger than anyone’s ego or personal agenda. Energy and momentum was going Iowa’s way from the start. After a blazing start and 2-1 score at half, the girls still had a second half to dominate which they did with style and finesse. The Hawkeye’s rock solid defense denied any chance of a comeback with stops on all shot attempts. As the final seconds ran off the clock Iowa was celebrating a Big Ten Tournament Championship after the year layoff of their Big Ten Regular Season Championship in 2004. For the Hawkeye’s it was a return to the way Iowa Field Hockey was supposed to be played and the return to glory of old for the program.
