More on the flooding of June 2008
On Friday morning at 6:30am June 13, I
stepped out to the back of Carver-Hawkeye Arena and shot this photo
looking onto the Coralville Strip. To the right you can see signs
for the Vine, Wig & Pen, and the Riley Law Firm. To the middle and
left the soccer field, track and softball fields all flooded.

Here is the a view from across the street from the Union. You can
see a white line behind the Little Brown Church. Those are
sandbags so probably 5 feet high from the ground at the church but much
higher where it actually is. This was taken on June 13 and the
water has seeped to the main entrance of the Union by June 14 in the
morning.

Here is a view from the cross walk on Burlington Ave near Hillcrest.
In the top middle of the picture is the Iowa Ave. bridge and the EPB
just to the right. At that point there are several feet from the
bottom of the bridge to the water. That bridge has been closed for
a few days already (this is June 13).

Here is a view to the south from the crosswalk overpass on Burlington
St. Riverside Drive also was closed just near the Dairy Queen so
no traffic to the south but still one street entry going north.
This also was June 13.

The crosswalk overpass view at Burlington St. shows the water level on
June 13 compared to the green I-beam (maybe 6 inches). The bridge
(the last bridge from east to west within Iowa City) was closed June 15.
On June
18 we got a look at Mabie Theater at bottom and across the river to North Hall.
A little further upstream and on the Union side (lower left) with the cross walk
across the river and looking at the Art Buildings (top).
Here you see the main river with not much spill over but Library on the right
and about mid-photo.
A little further downstream is the motor pool (lower left) If you take a
look at the Library (sort of upper right), across the street and heading toward
the bottom of the photo is the new Swimming and Recreation Center (mostly a hole
in the ground and soggy).
Jon Fravel (Class of 2006 and just ended his GA
position with us) has a website with flood photos as well. Link
