From the Desk of….
Paul Federici, M.Ed., L.A.T.
Director of Athletic Training Services
The past nine months have been a special time for me and my family. Joining the athletic training staff at The University of Iowa as well as the team of Physicians, Physical Therapists, Physicians’ Assistants, and Athletic Training Students has been very rewarding. As many of the alumni know, the staff athletic trainers at Iowa are deeply vested in the community, university, and in each other. I have, and will continue to draw upon their knowledge, experience, and analytical nature of thinking.
My hope to be somewhere that values the total well being of every student athlete has become a reality. Promoting the complete physical and mental health of Hawkeye student athletes is made possible through the shared expectation and vision among the athletic administration and sports medicine team professionals. I hope to contribute in some way to the education and professional preparation of our athletic training students whose predecessors have set such a high standard. After all, the education of young people is the fundamental thread of The University of Iowa for which every university activity is woven. As my understanding of our personnel, administration, and physical resources increases, I hope to contribute to make our alumni proud, and encouraging an environment of shared knowledge and ideas.
An example of the university’s commitment to becoming a leader in Sports Medicine is The University of Iowa Sports Medicine Center. The U.I.S.M.C. is providing excellent health care to athletic and active people of all ages. Dr. Amendola is establishing The University of Iowa Sports Medicine Center as a leader in Sports Medicine patient care, research, and education.
I have also learned a few things about living in the Hawkeye state….
I am proud to be a Hawkeye and an Iowan. I share your pride in our athletic and academic success.

The Accreditation Process
Dan Foster, Ph.D, A.T.C.
Director of Athletic Training Education
We have been immersed this year in a self-study that prepares us to complete our periodic accreditation review. The majority of the work is done this year in self-study and then next year (Spring 2006) we will have an onsite visit. The self-study is the product of many people reviewing and discussing and evaluating the program from inside out, top to bottom. To get the most benefit, we should find areas of strengths and areas needing strengthening. We have done that and now are in the process of making more fine-tuning adjustments to improve the program and keep current with the field of athletic training.
Our documents from the self-study will be sent to the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) in September 2005. They will take the fall semester to review our materials and then set up a date for the on-site visit. Usually two visitors will come to campus and interview administrators, faculty, staff, and students. They will visit our facilities including libraries, classrooms, athletic training rooms and clinics.
After all of that, the visitation team will generate a report to CAAHEP. This will be done within a month of the visit. That report will be sent to the parent organization for accreditation action. So far, we have had the good fortune to be fully accredited since 1974. I am optimistic that we will continue, mostly from the benefit of students and alumni who keep us on track and always moving toward the future. Wish us good luck!

Thoughts from John Streif, A.T.C
I had the opportunity to speak to the Football Bowl Association in April and took time from there to go to Nevada to visit with Hayden and Shirley Fry in Mesquite and see their new home and Hummer!
For those old timers I wanted to go there to see Arno Buntrock, an athletic trainer in the 1960’s who was here when I started as a student with the late Tom Spalj. He is in the Spring Valley Alzheimer Care Center, 6428 Chrystal Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89118. He knew me and we had an opportunity to spend some quality time together. Even at his age and condition he is so proud of his Iowa ties, as are all of us. It was a great opportunity for me.
Recreation Athletic Training Room Update
Many of you probably know by now that after 15 years of service to the University of Iowa Athletics and Athletic Training Services Boyd Murray resigned his position in September to pursue other opportunities. Boyd has completed his training and has begun his internship to be an insurance agent with State Farm. The Rec ATR will not be the same without Boyd’s sense of humor and leadership. Boyd can be contacted at his home at 354.0601 until he completes his final preparations for his business.
During the interim while a search for Boyd’s replacement took place the Rec ATR was anchored by two very strong Graduate Students. Kirsten Frederick, in her second year, maintained her duties with the women’s soccer team and men’s and women’s tennis teams; while also providing mentorship and guidance for Jenny Huff and the third year Athletic Training Students. Jenny Huff worked directly with the men’s cross country and track and field teams. The men’s cross country team set a new standard for performance placing third at the Big Ten Championships and Regional, and placing 13th at the National Championships thanks to Jenny’s expertise and efforts. Also, during the interim Jennie Hartgrave and Dan Foster provided the clinical expertise and supervision for the athletic training students.
Doug West accepted the position of associate director of athletic training and rejoined the Iowa Athletic Training Staff in November of 2004. Doug was a graduate assistant for Mike Lawler in the Field House from 1994-1997 and continued to teach in the athletic training education program until the spring of 2003. Doug returned to join an experienced athletic training staff and participates in the superior athletic training education curriculum at the University of Iowa. Cosmetic and assignment changes have occurred through the willingness of the graduate assistants to accept new responsibilities and expand their experiences. Kirsten Frederick began working directly with the baseball team Jenny Huff began working with the women’s soccer and men’s and women’s tennis teams. Doug works directly with the cross country and track and field teams.
As in the past, athletic training students obtain valuable experience and work intimately with student athletes, coaches, athletic training staff, physical therapists, physician assistants, nurses and physicians.
Jenn Delaney – Women’s Soccer
Mike Fumagalli – Baseball
Russell Dixon – Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field
Bryan Trumm – City High School and Men’s Track & Field
If you are in Iowa City please stop in the Rec ATR, some cosmetic changes have been made and we are optimistic that further changes will be made during the upcoming summer to better meet the needs of the Hawkeye Student-Athletes we serve. Best of luck to all, the staff and students of the Rec ATR look forward to seeing many Iowa Alumni at the NATA Annual Symposium.

The Maui Invitational
Thanksgiving, 2004
Brad Floy, A.T.C, Graduate Assistant with Men’s Basketball
This past November the Men’s Basketball team played in the Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii. The Hawkeye’s played extremely well by beating eventual Final Four participant, Louisville, in the opening round. On the second day, Iowa knocked off Texas, who also qualified for the NCAA tournament. In the championship game, the Hawks fell to this season’s national champions, North Carolina. The atmosphere at the tournament was unbelievable, playing in a small gymnasium packed with celebrities and former NBA stars such as Magic Johnson and David Robinson. The Hawks proved in front of a national audience that they are capable of playing with the best teams in the country.
In addition to great basketball, Maui offered the players countless opportunities to enjoy the ocean and perfect weather. Many of the players, coaches, staff, and families enjoyed activities such as parasailing, snorkeling, jet skiing, and surfing. The trip was capped off with a spectacular Thanksgiving dinner that included over one hundred Iowa alumni and fans who came not just from Iowa, but from across the country. It was a great opportunity for them to socialize and take pictures with the players and coaches. Having all the fans and families join the team for this holiday tournament truly meant a great deal to the players and gave them special memories to carry with them after their Hawkeye careers are over.
