On-Campus Varsity Sport GA Positions - 3 Openings for 2012-13

General Information

We have three athletic trainer positions available for graduate assistantship status starting in 2012-13.  The positions anticipated are with the varsity programs in Baseball, Men's Gymnastics, and Women's Volleyball.   A teaching assistantship may also be available with the undergraduate accredited education program.  All positions have direct mentor staff in the same facility to help to provide guidance and nurture independence.

Must be BOC certified or eligible to be accepted, and must be eligible for Iowa license by August.  GRE scores should be 500 or above on Verbal and 600 or above on Quantitative; and overall undergraduate GPA should be 3.00 or above to be considered for admission to the Health and Human Physiology Department where the Master of Arts degree in Exercise Science (Athletic Training) is offered.  Other degree plans in other departments are options.  GRE scores for other graduate programs on campus vary and should be obtained from the specific department of interest.  All students should have an interest in working with undergraduate students as clinical instructors.

Send a resume with contact reference names and a note of interest by e-mail to danny-foster@uiowa.edu .  Review of candidates will begin immediately and a decision to hire will be recommended when suitable candidates are identified.   The process of graduate school application should be started as soon as possible after initial contact with our staff.

**Otherwise from year-to-year we usually anticipate having six academic year graduate assistantship positions over a two year period; 10 and 12 month contracts may be available.  Our on-campus assistantships are with varsity sports: baseball, men's basketball, men gymnastics, women's rowing, men's & women's Track and Cross-country, and volleyball, but only a few of these are open each year.  All positions have direct mentor staff to help to provide guidance and nurture independence.  A stipend, out-of-state tuition waiver, tuition scholarships, state licensure fees, and health benefits make these positions an excellent financial situation.  In addition to these benefits, graduate students will work alongside experienced clinicians and within a coordinated sports medicine system of education, research, and service associated with the University Hospitals & Clinics along with local CEU opportunities.  For the 2011 appointments, we had openings in rowing and track which were offered in April 2011.  The men's basketball GA position was successfully offered in December 2010.  A Teaching Assestantship also was offered in early January 2011.  An additional assistantship for softball was completed in July 2011.

Academic Programs on campus are varied and provide both breadth and depth of experiences for potential athletic training graduate students.  In the department of Health and Human Physiology we offer a program specifically designed for athletic trainers.  You can get more information about this program of study by linking to it here.  The Program is listed under Health and Human Physiology in the Graduate College and the MA program in the department is listed as Exercise Science for application purposes.  Other academic programs within the department on campus that may provide a breadth of background to clinically trained athletic trainers are in Departments such as Health Studies, Leisure Studies, or in other Colleges such as The College of Public Health and the College of Business.
