Case Study 1
Division I College Baseball Player

]    Freshman physical exam

]    Med Hx:  Currently being seen for “mental health issues”

]    Diagnosed with depression

]    Physician notes:  On Ritalin in past for A.D.D.

Freshman year   

]    Participated without injury or illness

Sophomore Year

]    Acute bronchitis x16 days during fall ball

]    Facial fx – missed 8 days

]    Suicidal ideations – December

]    Pitching performance wavers between outstanding and far below avg – spring

]    “All Star” during very competitive summer league

 

Junior Year
Fall Ball

]    Piriformis strain – missed 3 days

]    Tibial periostitis

]    - x-rays

]    - bone scan

]    Able to throw but not run

Junior Year

]     Christmas break claimed to run for first 3 weeks and then symptoms returned

]     As games approached athlete was able to run

]     Middle season  - struck in head during altercation with teammate-symptoms took 5 days to resolve

]     Last regular season start – pitched poorly – asst coach berates & athlete has extreme emotional response

Case Study 2
Division I – Women’s Soccer Player

]    Freshman physical exam

]    Med hx includes tx for eating disorder – soph/jr year H.S.

]    Continues to take Paxil

Freshman Year

]    SI joint sprain during 2 a days

]    Results – 10 days lost

Sophomore Year

]    Mid season – ankle sprain – missed 2 days

]    Followed by LCL sprain – missed 12 days

]    Early Feb – winter work-outs

]    SI joint sprain – missed 7 days

Sophomore Year

]    Late February – dx as bulimic – seen at Student Health and Counseling Service x 2 months

]    Early April – hip flexor strain – missed 5 days

]    Late April – counselor, coach and athlete make decision – best to take time away from soccer

Sophomore Year

]    Two weeks later – athlete & counselor report doing very well

]    Soon athlete decides to retire from soccer

Junior Year

]    Early August – 1 week prior to 2 a days – athlete reports stating “she wants to return to soccer” but is currently having hamstring pain

]    Despite two months of eval and tx, athlete continues to have symptoms and plays sparingly

Junior Year

]    Early October – suicidal ideations – cites nursing exams, soccer practice, sinus infection, social and friend conflicts (roommates are teammates)

]    Met with physicians and counselors and permanently left soccer

Junior Year

]    Ten days following decision to leave soccer, hamstring pain totally resolved and “life is good”

Case Study 3
Division I – Male Distance Runner

]    Freshman year - relatively successful cross country season

]    Early December – mild Achilles tendinitis – took four months to fully heal.

]    Late February – IT band syndrome – took 6 mos. to fully heal

 

Total For Five-Year Career

]     13 cases – 2 with 2nd episodes

]     Injuries and illnesses include:

]     Achilles tendinitis x3

]     IT band syndrome x5

]     FHL tendinitis x2

]     Acute respiratory illness

]     Heat friction blister x2

]     Semi-tendinosis strain x2

]     Toe 2nd MP joint sprain

Fifth Year – (Senior)

]    9/8 – 10/22  - blister on heel

]    No indoor eligibility remaining

]    4/17 – Neurological/atypical

]    LMD Dx Guillain-Barre syndrome
