Preparation for Admission to Athletic Training at Iowa

For athletic training we do not recommend any specific preparation to high school students for college outside of the core college preparation courses and admissions requirements.  Those are shown below and a link to tips on admission for preparing to enter college as early as things to do in the 8th grade should also be helpful.  If we could reinforce anything, it would be to take as much language as possible in high school and to attempt to get as much background exposure to sports medicine as possible.  Taking a language all four years of high school means that you will not have a language requirement to complete while at college.  This gives you a lot of flexibility in your academic schedule.  Background exposures are most often through observation or job shadowing.  The key for us is to have broad-based experiences and in a variety of areas in sports medicine: athletic training (high school, college, recreation, clinic, etc), physical therapy, medicine (orthopaedics, family practice, pediatrics), physician assistant, etc.  The quality of the experience will be in what you get from it and not the amount of time you spend doing it.  We hope this helps and be sure to take a look at the following materials.
