  Clinical Assignments

Clinical assignments occur as a part of an overall scheme of clinical education where the practicum courses are used to organize the objectives and content of any given clinical assignment.  The overall scheme of clinical assignments starts with a skill development period of 8 weeks.  During that 8 weeks and in addition to the development of basic skills each student is assigned to two occasions at one of the two high schools and two days per week for three weeks at each of the clinical facilities on campus.  The second eight weeks of the fall semester and the spring semester comprise three eight-week assignments where students are randomly assigned to each clinical facility, except the Jacobson Building.  During the spring of the first year, students report preferences for a single sport experience for the second clinical year as well as which semester they wish to be assigned with the football staff (Jabcobson).  Some students will have collision and equipment intensive sport experience at the high schools, but everyone will have either fall or spring collision and equipment intensive sport experiences with Football staff and then one other staff assignment where they are in a facility with a variety of sports for upper extremity and lower extremity sports.  During November each year, second-year students are asked for their third year staff preferences and for their self-assessment of skills.  These are discussed with staff and faculty in December to determine the needs of the student and practicum assignments for the third year.

Students keep daily logs of clinical experiences. Portfolios that summarize these experiences are reviewed regularly. The time period over which experiences are accumulated also are logged by day and verified by the Program Director through records provided each month by the student. The regular assessment of practicum hours allows the Program Director, supervisors, and advisors, to direct and consult with students at appropriate early intervention times.  Attendance is required for practicum.  Students are expected to contact practicum supervisors one week prior to the beginning of their assignment for details about orientation. In general, students are expected to arrange their academic schedule to allow for pre-practice through post-practice activities on a regular daily basis. First year students may arrange a consistent 2 hour period each day of the school week that fits within a 1-6 pm time frame. Second year students allow for home competition schedules and weekend practices as possible in addition to daily weekly practice schedules for an average three hours per day. Third year students make every attempt to organize their practicum schedule to encompass the same athletic training health care coverage as their assigned mentor for a single team assignment for about four hours per day average. Vacation periods, time-off, absence, late arrival, and sickness is arranged with the clinical supervisor.

The Athletic Training Education Program has been designed to ensure that graduates are properly prepared for their role in providing health care for the the physically active person at all levels of competition and other settings where entry-level athletic trainers are employed. The obligations assumed by those who are to be entrusted with the care of the injured athlete or physically active person transcend mere expertise in their chosen field. Therefore, in addition to academic competence, students in the Athletic Training Education Program are expected to possess and demonstrate those qualities of professional conduct including integrity, morality, discipline, and compassion, which in essence reflect their suitability to assume this trust.
