An interest in athletic training
may stem from an avid interest in sports. For those students who not
only have an avid interest in sports but who are interested in pursuing
participation at Iowa as a student-athlete, you should read this policy
to determine if your goals will be met by pursuing athletic training at
Iowa.
Because athletic training has a
substantial clinical requirement with university athletic training
services, participation in athletics as a student-athlete may conflict
with the development of clinical objectives. Student athletes apply
under the same process as first year students. Admission of students to
the athletic training major is based on merit. Once a student-athlete
is admitted, an academic plan is established to allow the student to
complete the curriculum.
Student-athletes should be aware
that conflicts in scheduling assignments will occur in most instances.
The student must complete the same sequence of courses including
practicum. To do this the time to graduation cannot be guaranteed.
Most student-athletes require an additional year of courses and
practicum after their university athletic eligibility has ended in order
to complete requirements. All students must complete the class and
clinical education requirements in order to meet program requirements
for graduation.
Many times flexibility with
class and team schedules can be accommodated during the first two years
of the clinical program. In some cases, conflicts between team
activities and athletic training program clinical assignments are
difficult to manage, thus forcing an extension of time to complete
requirements. Most often, however, the final year of clinical practicum
will be completed post athletic eligibility.
