Admission to the Athletic
Training Major is based on several factors.
You must be enrolled at The University of Iowa for the fall
session or be admitted to The University of Iowa when application is made to be eligible for application review.
There are three primary
categories of factors used for selection to interviews when our
admissions committee reviews an application: scholarship, communication
skills, and health care background. We will
evaluate your application for these three categories and other factors
before selecting students for interview.
Applications are only
accepted in the late fall each year (December 1), and selections are made in the
early spring (by March 15). There is no advantage in
application review to applying early, but incomplete applications at the
deadline will be returned to the applicant. |

|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
To be considered for
admission into the professional preparation major in Athletic Training,
a student must show:<
1.
at least 11 s.h. of college credit including at least a "C" grade in
27:096 (1 s.h.). No courses taken
pass/fail will be included in the 11 s.h. count.
2.
at least a 2.50 grade-point average on all undergraduate course work
undertaken and at least a 2.50 grade-point-average for the University of
Iowa. A grade of "C" or higher is
required for all pre-requisite courses taken.
3. a complete
application with all requested materials.
These include a written statement and a listing of two references.
To be invited to individual and group interviews, preference is given to
applicants with high scholastic standing, strong writing skills, and
varied athletic training and health care exposures.
Personal interview is an important aspect of the admissions process.
Applicants invited for an interview are contacted by the Athletic
Training Program.
Within the preferences for interview, applicants must have:
1. a record of strong scholarship.
Those selected to interview usually possess an overall gpa of 3.00 or above,
and a 3.00 or above following fall semester grades with at least a “B” in 27:96.
2. observation in at least one athletic training
setting.
Other health care setting experiences, athletics and sports experiences,
and a variety of exposures to professionals in this field are highly
encouraged.
3. a strong ability in written
communication.
The written paper is reviewed for format, thesis, tense, active
voice, short varied sentences, use of familiar words, unity and
coherence of thought, development to explain and illustrate the
controlling idea or thesis; and spelling.

Application Review |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
If you are an entering first year student and do
not meet our minimum overall gpa requirement following the fall
semester, we will not review your application for other qualifying
factors. Fulfillment of the specific requirements for admission
does not ensure admission to the program. From applicants meeting the
minimum requirements, the program's admissions committee selects those
who appear to be best qualified for the study and practice of athletic
training. The admissions committee considers applicants' academic
averages including Iowa gpa, scores in 27:96, contact with references, writing ability, interview,
speaking ability, and other factors. Once admitted, students will need
to complete a physical examination, immunization record, and show
evidence of having personal health insurance.
Immunizations needed before participating in practicum assignments
include: tetanus and diphtheria (within the past 10 years); and must
show immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella, chicken pox, and present
evidence of a tuberculin skin test. Hepatitis B
immunization is recommended but not required. |

How to Apply |

|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
You must apply using the form
provided by the Athletic Training Program.
The application is available in paper form or electronically on
the internet. Paper forms may be obtained from
the course instructor for 27:96 or through the Program
Department Office at 414 Field House.
Applications are free.
You will need to contact references to be able to use their name and
address in your application, write a statement about your
reasons for application, and disclose some pertinent personal
information. Among those disclosures are statements
about civil or academic disciplinary actions and about abilities to meet
technical standards. Expect to hear from us about
individual and group interviews
once grades are posted in January.
You will be contacted either way about further involvement in the
